Father’s Day
Skip the traditional tie
for Father’s Day and get him something he can really use instead. (If he does like ties, get him a gift card to a tie store!)
Many of the ideas below work for any gift card–so be sure to pick one HE likes.
For example, if your dad isn’t into music, swap the iTunes gift card in the “You Rock!” idea with one to his favorite restaurant. Keep the candy and the sentiment. It all works so have fun with it.
Take Me Out to the Ballgame
Get Inspired: Get dad a gift card to an upcoming game along with some game day gear and Cracker Jacks. Buy him some peanuts too and be sure to clear your calendar in case he wants to take you with him.
Slip the gift card inside the Cracker Jack box for a real surprise!
Family Camping Trip

Get Inspired: Does your dad or husband like to camp? Get him a gift card to a National or State Park (some have them) and all the fixin’s for S’mores. If you can’t get a gift card to the park, get him a gift card for camping gear instead.
King of the Grill
Get Inspired: Get a gift card for the local butcher and tie it to a new recipe, rub, or barbecue utensil. Or get a gift card to the barbecue supply store instead. If he likes to grill, he’ll enjoy getting to pick something out for himself. The small token you add will give him inspiration.
My Pop Rocks
Get Inspired: Get dad a gift card to the music store or a concert series. Attach it to Pop Rocks candy or some generic rock candy. Write a list of 10 reasons why “My Pop Rocks” or burn a CD of songs that you and he enjoy together.

D-I-Y Dad
Get Inspired: If Dad is a D-I-Y kind of guy, get him a gift card to the home improvement store plus a few safety essentials he can’t find or conveniently forgets to use.
Fill Dad’s Shoes
Get Inspired: Frame a picture of your little one trying to walk in Daddy’s big shoes. Pair it with a gift card to the shoe store or a department store and add a note of appreciation telling him why his shoes are so hard to fill.
Get Out of Jail Free Gift Card
Get Inspired: Get your man a gift card for the golf course, fishing hole, hunting store, or whatever his passion is. Pack a cooler and send him out for the day.
Use this free downloadable Get Out of Jail Free
Coupon to set him free for the day.
Dad Time
Get Inspired: There is something special about spending time with dad. Get father a gift card to the bookstore plus a book he can read to the kids at bedtime. Have the kids make bookmarks or create bookmarks out of old family photos.
Some fun books for dad to read at bedtime are:
- My Dad, My Hero
- Just Me and My Dad (Little Critter) (Look-Look)
- I Love You, Daddy (Little Golden Book)
It’s O-FISH-all. You’re the Best Dad!
Get Inspired: Add fishy crackers or candy to a gift card to Bass Pro Shop and tell him he is “O-FISH-ally the Best Dad Ever!” You can swap out the edible fish for a new fly or lure. Bass Pro Shops has all sorts of outdoor gear, so this idea works even if dad is into hunting, golf, or hiking instead. Or keep the fishy crackers and get a different gift card. The “o-FISH-all” theme is very versatile.
Fathers of Faith
Get Inspired: Let dad pick out an inspirational gift for himself or for the family with a religious bookstore gift card. Slip the gift store into a book about fatherhood and include a personal note telling him how much you appreciate all he does for the family.
Dinner for Dad
Get Inspired: Get dad a gift card to his favorite restaurant and deliver it with a homemade dish, store bought delicacy, or a treasured family recipe. Below are some combos to inspire you:
- Applebee’s Gift Card with an apple pie
- Chili’s Gift Card with homemade chili or a chili recipe
- Brinker Gift Card with the fixin’s for a hot fudge sundae
- Cheesecake Factory Gift Card with a favorite appetizer
- Subway Gift Card with a plate of homemade cookies
- On the Border Gift Card with your homemade salsa
Family Ties
Instead of a traditional, get Dad a set of family ties with a gift membership to Ancestry.com. Slip it into a “how to” book on how to get started or deliver the gift membership with a live tree to plant in the backyard. Offer to spend time with dad researching the family’s history.
