Baby Shower Gift — it’s not what you think.

My sister sent me a link to this Date Night in a Bag gift idea and I love it. But not for the reason you might think.

Date Night to Me

My husband and I love going to the movies. But we found a bowl of popcorn and shows on the DVR to be much more practical after the brood started growing.

Think Baby

I love this idea for a baby shower because heaven knows when that newborn arrives, mom and dad won’t have a second to themselves for about 18 years. They will have to create date night in a bag, on the couch, with a fox, in a box, and whatever else ways they can figure.

I can honestly say that my husband and I probably wouldn’t swap this bag back and forth. But I do think it would make a fabulous gift. And the gals at The Dating Divas include several other date night suggestions. Each, would also make terrific baby shower or wedding day gifts. Thanks for sharing, ladies!

You Rock Valentine! (It’s not too late!)

Valentine Rocks Gift Card Holder for iTunesUnless you’re new to this site, you know that I love the iTunes gift card. It’s so versatile. You can use it to download music, apps, games, and more. The gift cards are easy to redeem and you don’t need an iPhone or iPod to use it. It’s a great gift for young and old alike.

Heart Card

Target has an iTunes gift cards with little headphones in the shape of a heart. So cute. I had to try it out with my classic, “You Rock” gift card holder.

iTunes gift card for Valentine's Day at TargetI filled a mason jar with rock candy. But you could also deliver it with Pop Rocks candy, Rocky Road candy bar, Rock Star energy drink, and beyond.

Or get the kids involved and paint rocks for the garden. It’s so easy to improvise!

My Heart Burns for You Valentine!

My HeartBurns for you Valentine Gift CardThis is a great way to give a restaurant gift card on Valentine’s Day or to a signifitant other on a special day.

Download the “My heart burns for you” digital download to get started.

Restaurant Gift Card

Deliver a restaurant gift card with something that gives you heartburn (such as spicy foods) or something that helps you get rid of it (antacid or Pepto-Bismol). In the example shown, I tied a Chipotle Restaurant gift card to a jar of Chipotle salsa. (A homemade jar of salsa would be even better!)

Candlelight fire instead

My heart burns for you Valentine is a great gift card holderAnother way to use this tag is to deliver a gift card with a candle, set of matches, or a candle accessory such as a candle sleeve. Any gift card will do since the candle theme will match up nicely with the burning heart idea, but a gift card to the spa would be a fitting touch.

Or a Campfire

Tie a gift card to Bass Pro Shops, REI, or the camping store to a fire starter, stack of firewood, or a handy lighter. Add the “heartburn” tag and you’ll all set.

I Chews You, Valentine!

I Chews You Valentine Gift Card HolderMy step-daughter, Teryn, texted me with a cute Valentine gift idea that got my wheels turning. She suggested writing, “I wouldn’t chews anyone but you, hot stuff!” and then pairing the card with with a red pack of cinnamon gum. I love it.

Chews You Tag

Since I just started selling Digital Downloads to make gift carding easier, I had to take her idea and try it out.

Chew on that!

I Chews You for Valentine's Day Gift Card tagThere are so many cute things that go with the “chew” theme. Start with a restaurant gift card. Then pair it with gum, taffy (as shown), laffy taffy, caramels, or a Charleston Chew candy bar.

Got a baller?

Here’s a fun variation for anyone from a tee-ball player to a major leaguer. Get a gift card to the baseball store (or ballpark) and buy a pack of Big League Chewing Gum. Then attach this “Chews You” tag and you’re all set.

Easy Last Minute Valentine’s Day Gift

Valentine gift card

Simple last-minute gift idea for Valentine's Day

Get Valentine a gift card and tie it to a potted plant. The plant will last longer than roses and won’t cost near as much. Add a simple note revealing your true feelings, which is all anybody really needs on Valentine’s Day anyway.

Go Crazy

If you want to go crazy–buy a collection of gift cards and tie each one to a different stem. Use a theme so Valentine knows you picked cards purposefully (and didn’t just stand at the kiosk grabbing things.)

Some Ideas

- Pedicure and shoe store
- Dinner and a movie
- Clothing store and salon
- Spa and bookstore
- Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
- Tennis lessons and tennis store

Or keep it simple and just write that heartfelt note.

Valentine’s Day–Pink Pancakes and Beyond

Valentine's Day Gift Card

In hindsight: maybe it was the scarf?

My best Valentine’s Day memory will always be waking up to a special breakfast of pink pancakes. Oh, how I wish this particular holiday had stayed so sweet and simple.

The Evolution

  • Elementary School: Loved making the mailbox and delivering cards to classmates. Didn’t like mushy, “Be Mine” quotes on the pre-printed cards. Wished I had more that read, “Have a Nice Valentine’s Day.” Worried someone would mistake canned comments for my actual feelings. Ick.
  • Junior High School:  Missed the mail boxes and hand delivery. Saw some girls receive Valentine’s Day gifts from boys. Knew the only Valentine I’d receive that day would be from my mom. On the fence about that.
  • High School: School fundraiser. Kids buy carnations and have them surprise delivered to classmates throughout the day. Didn’t get any. Pink pancakes and Valentine from mom lessens the blow. A little.
  • College: Had a boyfriend who bought me flowers for the first time. Fell in love with the idea of having a Valentine and mistook those feelings for actual love. Ick.
  • Dating: Does he love me? Does he love me not? What if I write, “Be Mine” and he writes, “Have a Nice Valentine’s Day?”
  • Married: Do we even need to exchange Valentine’s Day cards? Yes, of course we do. Got to keep the flame alive. But let’s not spend too much on the gifts–we’ve got bills to pay.

And Now…

I’ll make pink pancakes for my elementary school kids. I’ll give my husband a card and tell him how much I love and appreciate him. I’ll probably even make spaghetti for dinner because it’s one of his favorites and the kids will think the red pasta sauce is Valentiney. They’ll be sick from eating all the candy they got in their mailboxes and I’ll put them to bed early. Then Paul and I will snuggle on the couch, eat licorice and Hot Tamales, and watch one of our favorite shows on DVR.

I’ll realize, once again, that this simple Valentine night makes up for all the miserable Valentine’s Days I endured when I was younger. Worth the wait.
