Gift Card Switcheroo!

Buy a different gift card with a Target Gift Card

Buy a Different Gift Card with a Target Gift Card

I took my son to Target so he could redeem one of his birthday gift cards. But with ALL the choices (games, toys, clothes), he couldn’t decide what to buy. That’s when we discovered Target is now selling gift cards to other stores. (Thank you for finally getting on board with that Target!!!)

Imagine Michael’s delight when he discovered he could buy a Club Penguin Membership gift card with his Target gift card. This turned out to be the perfect choice because he loves playing Club Penguin but I won’t pay for his membership. (I save my money for the Wii and other games that encourage movement.)

How to Buy a Gift Card with a Gift Card

There are several website services that enable you to swap your gift card. But with those sites you would have to sell them your gift card (for less than face value) and buy a new one at a discount. Or cash in your gift card and buy whatever you want with cash. But it’s much easier to swap a gift card by purchasing a new gift card with the one you already have.

  • The bad news: It only works if your gift card is to a store that sells other gift cards.
  • The good news: There are many stores that sell other store gift cards–including Target, Babies R Us, Toys R Us, Michaels, Safeway, Vons, CVS, Lucky, and hundreds of others. The key is to look for a kiosk. If you find the kiosk–you have options!
  • As gift card kiosks increasingly show up (and stores realize they can make money and drive customers to their store by offering this convenience), it should also be increasingly easy to pull off the Gift Card Switcheroo!!! Works for me!

A Valentine Gift Holder Full of Possibilities!

Fun idea

Fun Valentine Gift idea from Michaels

Michaels posted this video on their Facebook page and I wanted to share it with you. Several little gifts are tied together with a ribbon, all stuffed neatly into a shipping tube. As the recipient pulls the ribbon, the presents are revealed, leading up to a big gift at the end. Jo’s finale is a crafty Valentine t-shirt, but I suggest topping things off with a gift card instead.

My Version

I love what Jo has done, but for my taste (and time constraints), I’d probably get a smaller tube and tie just two or three items en route to the gift card. You’d get the same effect without the added expense and effort.

Fun Themes

You could adapt this idea to any occasion–a baby shower, bridal gift, teacher appreciation, or birthday. I see a theme tube as well–maybe a group gift of several gift cards tied to the ribbon. Or a movie gift card tube including snacks and movie tickets with theater wrapping paper on the tube itself. A baseball themed tube with sports page wrapping and baseball cards, sunflower seeds, cracker jacks, and an MLB gift card inside. Oh, a tennis ball canister would work great here as well. Uh-oh, I’m starting to trip over myself with gift card ideas! Seriously, who doesn’t want to open a string of goodies to get to a gift card??! So many possibilities.

Speaking of Michaels

Speaking of Michaels, don’t forget to answer the Valentine’s Day poll to be entered in the $25 Michaels Gift Card drawing. You just might win and then you can march yourself down to Michaels to make your own Valentine’s Day tube! Good stuff!

The Gift of Pictures: Thanks Barry!

Kukuk Family Photo

Why did it take me so long to do this?

Can you believe we’ve never taken a formal family picture? I’ve got a million snapshots (some of which include everybody), but no perfectly posed, matching outfits, five smiling faces photos. I have two excuses–one valid and the other just lazy.

The not-so-good reason we’ve never taken a family picture is because I dread moments where my children are expected to be, “on.” I know from too many days in the motherhood trenches that it is nearly impossible to make everybody happy at the same time. I can barely put a dinner on the table that meets with total approval much less get the entire clan dressed in clothes I pick out. Plus I have recurring flashbacks of the family picture I ruined as a kid because I had to stand while my brother and sister got to sit on a lap. (A total injustice for which I still remember the tantrum I threw. Sorry Mom.) So reason number one for not taking a family photo: justifiable fear.

Reason number two: We are on a tight budget and I always figured the cost of getting a formal sitting would be even greater than the emotional toll. But that’s where I was wrong. In a quick hour, Barry Zundel made us look like the family we strive to be. And rather than obligate us to buy expensive prints from him, he gave us a CD of digital photos I can print whenever and wherever I want. That will save me a bundle and has me thinking what a great idea it would be to give the gift of pictures. Here are a few of my thoughts:

  • Photography: Get a gift card to a studio or a gift certificate from a local photographer. It doesn’t have to be plastic to be legit. If you know someone who takes pictures, pay in advance and deliver the gift certificate so there is no excuse for not capturing the moment.
  • Prints: Get a gift card for photo development from a store or from one of the many online services such as Shutterfly or my favorite, blurb.
  • Fashion: I did spend more hours than I wanted to looking for clothes we could all wear. With a gift card, I might have been able to get the job done faster because I would have focused more on the “look” and less on the price.
  • Frames: Sometimes the frame costs more than the actual picture. With a gift card to the frame store, the recipient can turn a nice photo into a piece of art at a fraction of the cost.

Though I’m thinking right now about family photos, these gift card ideas would be great for graduation, new baby, wedding, or even a significant birthday. Come to think of it, do you need a good reason to take a picture at any time of year? Not really. All I needed was the right photographer and a little courage. I’m so glad we finally did this.

A Gift Card for the Ages–All Ages!

40 Things I love about You

A Gift Card for the Ages--All Ages!

My girlfriend Shannon just turned 40 and she’s amazing. She’s one of those gals who has style–you know who they are. Her house is arranged just so, she’s always dressed nicely without being overdone, and everything she does looks artistic and polished. I love being around her.

So Shannon’s mom threw a surprise birthday brunch complete with fresh squeezed juice and a frittata fresh out of the oven. Everything just as delightful as the guest of honor. As much as I loved the atmosphere, though, a gift from Shannon’s sister captured my full attention! So simple, so personal, so gift-cardable!

This sweet sibling filled a jar called “40 Things I love About You” with sentiments about their relationship as friends, as sisters, as daughters of God, and mothers of little angels. We all oohed and ahhed as Shannon read a few of the notes through weepy eyes.

I love the idea and wanted to add a gift card spin–drop a $40 dollar gift card into the jar of 40 sentiments. And don’t be caught up on age. This idea can be tailored to any birthday – 23 things I love about you and a $23 gift card to the yogurt shop. 38 things I like about you and a 38 dollar gift card to the sandwich shop. Or change it from a birthday gift to Mother’s Day, a thank you gift, or a group gift where everybody adds a note to the recipient.

So clever. So stylish. So Shannon. I love it.

The Princess and the Frog Gift Card

My best sports gal pal–the one who will drop anything for a game of tennis, basketball, softball, etc.–called me the other day for gift card advice. Her tween daughter had been invited to a princess party and Suzanne wanted to know if I could improve upon the present she’d put together. I tell ya, it was so darn cute, I had nothing to add. In fact, I made her promise to send me a picture when she got it all put together.

The Princess and The Frog Gift Card package included:
- Gift card to Target in shape of a frog
- Princess crown
- Princess wand
- Candy Kisses for her true love’s kiss

Is this cute or what!?

Extreme Birthday Gift Card is Perfect!

Extreme Birthday Basket

Extreme Birthday Basket

My girlfriends are the best.  They recently showered me with all sorts of treats for my birthday.  I threw everything in this basket so you could see how wonderful these gals are and how well they know me. The assortment might look random, but this basket tells a story.

Of course, you know those gift cards poking out of the back are a particular favorite.  Movie tickets are always a treat and the Extreme Pizza certificates didn’t last 24-hours in my house.  As I trudged through stacks of work today, I kept thinking, ”Thank goodness I don’t have to cook dinner tonight!”  As a bonus, I found an Extreme Pizza coupon in the mail, allowing us to stretch the value even further.

Birthday gifts appreciated. Girlfriends adored. Dinner I didn’t have to make or buy…EXTREMELY great.

Extremely good deal: Gift card, coupon, and handsome delivery boy.

Extremely good deal: Gift card, coupon, and handsome delivery boy.

Extreme is a great name for clever gift carding. Purchase an Extreme Pizza gift card, tie it to a pack of Extreme Sour candy and add an “Extreme” comment:

  • “Hope you have an EXTREMELY good birthday”
  • “You’re an EXTREMELY awesome teacher.”
  • Thanks for going to the EXTREME to help us this year.

I love these ideas.  I’m going to use it to kick off the Teacher Appreciation section I’ve been thinking about.

(P.S. That was my first Extreme Pizza.  It won’t be my last. Yum!)
