Father’s Day Giveaway: My Pop Rocks!
Just out of high school, my dad started a band, cut a record, and signed a recording contract. After a little success and a few eye-opening experiences, he decided to go on a church mission and get his education instead.
Though his rock star days were short lived, he never stopped singing and playing the guitar at home. He often kicked off bedtime with a series of rock ‘n’ roll songs before ending with possibly the worst lullaby ever—“Old Shep” by Elvis. (The boy has to shoot his own dog. Are you kidding me Dad?)
In honor of my Dad and his sometimes poor song choices, we’re announcing the “My Pop Rocks!” Gift Card Giveaway for Father’s Day.
One winner, selected at random, will receive $60 in iTunes gift cards and a pack of Pop Rocks candy. You can take this idea, add a note telling dad why he rocks, and you’re all set for Father’s Day!
To enter this contest, leave a comment telling me why your pop rocks! And it doesn’t have to be music related. My pop also rocks because he taught me the value of hard work, how to make a lay-up, and got me interested in computers at a young age.
And don’t forget, we have other Father’s Day ideas on the site or you can take one of our birthday ideas for him and change the greeting.
Ok, answer the question! Why does your pop rock?
Legal Stuff: Contest open to continental US residents only. Contest ends Sunday, June 20that midnight PST. Winner will be notified by e-mail. Be sure our e-mail address (shelley@giftcardgirlfriend.com) clears your spam filter. If winner doesn’t respond within one month, a runner-up will be chosen.

Mine rocks – he kept me interested in music! He also took my family to awesome adventures growing up and still does for the rest of the family!

My pop rocks because he goes above and beyond for Me and my kids and not just us but anyone else who needs help, inspiration or just a lended ear. He’d give a stranger the shirt off his back. He’s the best pop ever! MY POP ROCKS!

My pop ROCKS because he has a rockingly corny sense of humor that can put a smile on your face regardless of your prior mood.
My pop rocks because hes a ROCKet Scientist!
My daddy is a rockin’ pop for a couple reasons
He migrated to the States ALONE when he was 17 in order to receive a college education. And he created a life for himself here, again, alone; his family remains overseas.
He placed 2nd in mid-America Tae Kwon Do championships in the ’70s. And he made sure my sister and I got our black belts to ensure that no man would ever be able to bully us around!
He used to wear leather pants and cruise around on a motorcycle. (My mom was attracted to his bad boy ‘tude). He still busts them out on occasion to prove that he’s “still got it.”
He had two girls and spoiled them rotten. I remember him loving to play Barbie dolls as much as I did.
And most importantly! My rockin’ pop took a huge chance when the recession hit by creating his own company. For 6 years we had no vacations, no new things, cut back on going out and even the things we ate. Money was pulled from my parents’ retirement fund for my sister and my educations, and that sacrifice was never questioned. Dad worked long hours – I remember waking up in the middle of the night to him still sitting at his computer working – but his dedication was unwavering. If some months there was no profit, he always gave what money there was to his co-workers and took just enough to tide us over until the next check.
Anyway, things worked out in the end, and I think in his lifetime dad has proven he’s got a will of steel. He’s our personal hero. His goal has always been to make us happy and he does all the time

My dad rocks because he’ll do whatever it takes to make his daughters happy. Even making mini meatloafs, wrapping them in foil and freezing them for his youngest daughter to have her favorite meal at college.
I love the photo you shared! That is so cool. My pop rocks because she taught me all about good music, bought me my first guitar, and actually just about every guitar I’ve owned since
Dads ROCK!
My pop rocks because he always smiles when he sees me, because he makes my favorite foods when I go home, and because he doesn’t complain, even when things aren’t doing so well. Thanks daddy!
My pop rocks because he has become one of the most open minded and welcoming dads imaginable.
My pop rocks because he gave me good taste in music!
My pop rocks cuz he marches to his own drum. Whether it’s dancing, or telling jokes, they always seem to go wrong and he never does recover. lol but that’s what makes him, him.
My pop rocks because he always said we have enough for our need, but not for our greed.

My pop rocks because I know that I can always count on him — he really prides himself in being there for our family. As an example, when I got the swine flu last fall, he traveled to stay with me at my apartment and take care of sad, sick me! omydarlingblog(at)gmail(dot)com

My Dad rocks because he paid for my college education without blinking, which let me start off adult life not saddled by a lot of debt. It was really an invaluable gift.
My pop rocks because he taught me the value of hard work & saving. And he’s a funny guy.
My dad literally “rocked” – he played the fiddle in a bluegrass band! Sadly, my dad passed away a few weeks ago after battling lung cancer. But, right before he passed away, his group finally made a CD. We will have that to treasure forever.
My pop rocks because he’s loved me unconditionally, the perfect example of God’s love for me.

My Pop Rocks because he has worked his entire life and paid for all four of his kids to attend college. He cooks breakfast every weekend, reads mystery novels, and can fix ANY computer problem! He’s a great guy and always plays the air drums while he drives (on the steering wheel, of course!). He ROCKS!
My pop rocks because even though he wasn’t around much when I was a child, now that I’m older, we are good friends, and I can tell him pretty much anything without worrying about him judging me.
My pop rocks because when I moved out he moped around for weeks.
My pop rocks because the first time I put a dent in my car, he said, “it’s just a car. I’m glad you’re ok.” That attitude came in handy when I *ahem* hit a wall this past weekend.
My pop rocks because he made it work when we were growing up, even when he was laid off twice from jobs. He held it together and did what he had to do to continue to support the family (my mom worked part time). And he was always good to us.
My pop rocks, because even though he is big and gruff at first look, he’s actually a big softie that would do anything to help someone who is truly in need.
My pop rocks because he taught me to appreciate the music of Led Zeppelin, the roar of a Mustang engine, the bliss that is a slice of sharp cheddar cheese on top of a piece of warm apple pie…and to start socking away money for my retirement plan when I was 21…a thought that seemed ridiculous to me at the time…but I’m glad I took his advice!
Thanks for the chance : )
My pop rocks because he gave me a love of nature, animals, and music. All things that are crucial, right?
My pop ricks because he is the hardest working man I know and does it all for his family. He plays the drums too!
My pop rocks because he can be serious when necessary but is still always fun and goofy (and I’ll always be his little girl)!
He rocks because he spends time with his grandchildren.
My pop rocks because he is always there for me & my family when we need some guidance & advice. He’s awesome!!!

My pop rocks because he loves me unconditionally. He was diagnosed 8 years ago with Alzheimer’s, but before that I came out as a lesbian and he told me he would love me no matter what. And he still does. He doesn’t remember much, but he remembers me, my voice and that’s enough for me. I’m so thankful for a dad like him.
My pop rocks because we eat chips and salsa on the floor of his bedroom and watch the NBA Finals.
My dad rocks because of his unconditional love emotionally, physically, and spiritually to my siblings & mother & me.
My pop rocks because after working all day with big sweaty football players, being diagnosed with skin cancer, and making an hour commute everyday so we can live in a warm nice place, he still can manage to make me laugh at the end of the day.
I love you pops!
my dad rocks because he would do anything for my mom, my sister, and myself. he is incredibly selfless, funny, and generous.

My pop actually does rock in a musical sense! Some of my earliest memories are of hearing him play with his band, Sweetwater, while I watched from my playpen. As my brother and I grew up my dad left his rock n’ roll band days behind, and began writing, singing and selling jingles to pay the bills. By the time I was in high school he had quit the jingle gig, too, and was working as a counsellor at a halfway house while putting himself through school to get a degree in psychology. He now works as a therapist for troubled teens, but in all that time, music has stayed with him. He still has a regular group of friends that join him for gigs in events all over our town, and we even play a few times a year as a whole family! His love of music is known to everybody in our small town, and he’s always asked to play for special parties or festivals. The only payment he ever accepts is a jar of apple butter, the pride of our annual Autumn Festival!
My dad has always taught me to hold on to what you love. You might need to do something else to pay the bills, but that doesn’t mean you can’t rock in your free time!

My Pop Rocks because he has always been a shoulder to cry on. When I was hurt as a kid, he was always there. When I am hurt as an adult (which seems more often then when I was a kid) he is still there for me!!!

My dad is Awesome because he has always been a moral example to me. He has served in the military for 20+ years and has such a love for our country and truely believes and lives the military standards. He is a big tough guy but inside is a total softey and loves his family. I love my dad. His motto is “teach correct principles and let them govern themselves.” 4 wonderful grown children later I’d say that it worked!
Can I talk about my husband instead? He’s an awesome dad. My dad skipped out on us when I was 5.
My pop rocks (my hubby, I mean) because he works hard and comes home to help me out with our 3 kids.
